Glenmorangie whiskies

Glenmorangie is a northern Highland distillery in Tain, by the Dornoch Firth. It belongs to LVMH, the French luxury group. It has the tallest stills in Scotland, which give a particularly fine, floral spirit, and it is one of the houses that popularised wine cask finishes. Its range, with versions finished in port, sherry and sweet wine, is a perfect journey through the effect of wood on whisky.

Guide to Glenmorangie

History

William Matheson founded the distillery in 1843 in an old brewery, with second-hand stills from a gin distillery that were unusually tall. That height has been kept as a hallmark through every expansion. The house became famous for its “Sixteen Men of Tain”, the team that made the whisky for years. In the 20th century its malt was one of the first to be sold under its own name in Scotland. From the 1990s its director of distilling and whisky creation made wine cask finishes the house speciality. LVMH bought it in 2004.

House style

Glenmorangie’s tall stills let only the lightest vapours through, which gives a delicate spirit: citrus, peach, vanilla, flowers and honey. The house takes great care of its bourbon casks and then combines them with finishes: port brings chocolate and red fruit; sherry, dried fruit and spice; Sauternes sweet wine, honey and candied citrus. It uses no peat.

Where to start

Start with The Original 10 Year Old, light, floral and fruity. Then try the finishes: The Lasanta 12 Year Old, with sherry; The Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old, with port; and The Nectar d’Or 12 Year Old, with Sauternes wine. Tasting them one after the other is a great lesson in wood. Signet, with malt roasted like coffee, is a special edition. All of them can be drunk neat, without ice.
